Every morning, Anna-Britta does her qigong on the beach below her small seaside cottage on the island. Life is peaceful and pleasant, but before she can close the circle of her life, there is one thing she must do: write to the daughter she was forced to give up. She has carried this grief all her life and now she wants to try to change what happened.

Fredrika is a divorced speech therapist and lives a good life in her townhouse in Östersund - until the day her son tells her that he and the family are moving to Oslo. Her life is thrown into turmoil and it is not made any easier when she receives a letter from a woman who claims to be her biological mother. The woman who gave her up, the woman who suffered from mental problems and was treated for them at times. Why would Fredrika want to meet her? What if she is more like her than she wants to be?

Helena happily cooks for everyone who visits her restaurant on the farm. Life is starting to fall into place, but at times the loneliness feels difficult. Her dream of having her own dog grows stronger, to keep her company on the farm and on her skiing and hiking trips. And she has Emily to work with and Louise to support her in her plans for a cottage rental and cultural center in the barn. She still has Sonja around, even though she is getting alarmingly tired and confused. But she still offers wise life advice.

An advertisement for cottages to rent prompts Fredrika to go to the beautiful Fjällnäs, where she can enjoy the landscape and Helena's good food and care during this unusually hot summer. There she can ponder life and try to find the peace she so desperately needs. How should she relate to the letter, to her roots and to who she really is?
