Malin Haawind is a writer, journalist, editor, ethnologist and translator. She lives in Stockholm with her husband and two daughters.
She began her writing career with four reportage books, in 2016 came Fuck Off - a book about arguing, in 2017 Stop Yelling for Fuck’s Sake – A book about life with children, in 2018 Shut Up and Eat: a book about food joy, death anxiety, garlic and butter and in 2019 Holy Shit - a book about dirt. In 2021 came the first part in a fiction trilogy; They Came from Islands, in 2022 And the Sea Was Giving Back and in 2023 Towards the Stony Beach. A warm and atmospheric novel series that shapes the story of a family in the People's home and Swedish welfare state, from small coastal communities to the modern industrial city.
In Malin Haawind's storytelling, it is clear that she is also an ethnologist, here is a strong ability to bring people and lives from now and in the past to life with an overview that includes all social classes. She has captivated readers with her language and her ability to portray an inner life.
Malin Haawind's own words about her writing:
"I have always been most fascinated by what happens inside people, both as a reader and a writer. That is why my stories are as much about the inside as they are about the plot itself. The meaning of everyday things, the details of our lives, gives me a lot of inspiration. Topics that I often return to are: class, women's history, spiritual anxiety, complex relationships and the significance of places. Basically, it is probably about exploring what it means to be human. Imagine that through literature we get the opportunity to live several lives and visit times and places we would otherwise never come close to - it is such a gift."
